Pediatric Brain Injury

Pediatric Brain Injury Physiotherapy Service Specialized, goal-focused physiotherapy for children and adolescents recovering from traumatic or acquired brain injury—delivered in clinic, home, or community settings to restore movement, balance, coordination, and everyday function. Who it’s for Children and young people with: Traumatic brain injury (road traffic accidents, falls, sports injuries) Acquired brain injury (stroke, meningitis, encephalitis, hypoxic injury, post–neuro surgery) Ongoing neurological difficulties affecting mobility, posture, or participation at home/school What the service includes Comprehensive assessment of muscle strength, tone, range of motion, posture, balance, coordination, and functional mobility (rolling, sitting, standing, walking). Individualized treatment plans aligned with family goals and school/community participation. Therapeutic activities using play, toys, and games to make sessions engaging while promoting normal movement patterns. Gait re-education, strengthening, stretching, balance and coordination exercises, and functional task practice. Positioning advice, equipment recommendations (standing frames, walking aids, specialist seating), and orthotic referrals where needed. Optional adjuncts: hydrotherapy, functional electrical stimulation, chest physiotherapy/breathing exercises, and home exercise programs. Care settings & delivery Inpatient/acute neuro-rehab (bedside, therapy gym, hydrotherapy pool, hospital corridors/garden). Outpatient clinic sessions and day programs. Home- and community-based rehab to support transition from hospital to home/school. Expected outcomes Improved mobility, balance, and coordination Greater independence in daily activities (transfers, walking, self-care) Safer movement and reduced risk of falls/contractures Better participation in school, play, and community life

How Does Muscular Dystrophy Present in Children?
